Nouns

    Nouns 

A Noun is a Naming Word. It names a person, place or thing, an animal or bird.


Example Nouns
1. man, sister, boy, Shamim (persons)
2. village, house, England, sea (places)
3. pencil, shirt, vegetable, book (things)
4. chicken, cat, lion, parrot (animals)


Nouns are classified into,
                                                                                                                                                                                     I.            Common Noun,
                                                                                                                                                                              II.            Proper Noun,
                                                                                                                                                                      III.            Collective Noun,
                                                                                                                                                                           IV.            Abstract Noun,
                                                                                                                                                                                   V.            Countable Noun and
                                                                                                                                                                           VI.            Uncountable Noun.


1. Common Noun :
A Common noun is a name given in common to all persons, places, things or animals of the same class or kind.
e.g. Girl, town, bat, dog, cock.

2.Proper Noun :
A Proper noun is the name of a particular person, place or animal. It begins with a capital letter.
e.g. Peter, London, England, Timon.

3.Collective Noun :
A Collective noun is the name that refers to a group of persons or collection of things taken as a whole.
e.g. people, crowd, group, flock, fleet, furniture, bunch, gang, team.


a band of robbers, a gang of workers, a bevy of birds, a bunch of grapes, a team of players, a school of dolphins, a pack of hounds, a mob of students.

4.Abstract Noun
An Abstract noun denotes something that is abstract (not visible, nor tangible). It is the name of an idea, emotion or action, a state or a subject of study.
e.g. liberty, sorrow, advice, knowledge, grammar.
5.Countable Noun :
The nouns that can be counted are called countable nouns. They have singular and plural forms of their own.
e.g.
Singular
 Plural
a pencil
two pencils
a mango
five mangoes
a man
ten men
an egg
two eggs

6.Uncountable Noun :
The nouns that cannot be counted are called uncountable nouns. They do not have plural forms. They generally refer to drinks, liquids, grains, gases, materials, metals etc. The abstract nouns are also uncountable.

Example: -
tea, coffee, wine, wheat
oxygen, ink, gold
brandy, milk, rice
air, glass, copper
sympathy, truth, knowledge




Exercise
Read the following sentences, pick out the nouns and then prepare four different lists of
1)   Common Nouns, 2) Proper Nouns, 3) Collective Nouns, 4) Abstract Nouns.

1.   Cow is a domestic animal.
2.   London is the biggest city in England.
3.   The gang came late to the theatre.
4.   Honesty is the best policy.
5.   Our team is playing in the court.
6.   Laila sang a sweet song.
7.   The teacher gave an announcement to the class.
8.   Everest is the biggest peak.
9.   The whole family joined the party.
