Adverb

 


Adverbs
An adverb is also a describing word. It goes with a verb and adds to its meaning. It is a verb-helper.

 The different types of adverb are as follows :
1. Adverb of manner :
It modifies a verb, an adjective or another adverb. It shows how the action is done.e.g.
      David runs fast. (adverb "fast" modifies the verb "runs")
      It is perfectly alright. (adverb "perfectly" modifies the adjective "alright")
      You can go very fast by motorbike. (adverb "very" modifies the adverb)

2. Adverb of time :
This type of adverb shows when the action is done. e.g.
      We will come tomorrow.
      They are reading now.
      He came here tow days ago.
      She visited our village once.
      He never goes to cinema.
      I will meet him tonight.

3. Adverb of frequency :
This type of adverbs expresses ‘how often’.e.g.
      He has visited my house twice.
      She often phones up me.
      They always come late.

4. Adverb of place :
This type of adverb tells where the action is done.e.g.
      The bus will stop here.
      Do not play there.
      They are waiting outside.
      You can go anywhere.

5. Interrogative adverb :
The question word "when", "where", "why", "how" are teh interrogative adverbs, when they are used in questions.e.g.
      Where is your school? (of place)
      When do you get up? (of time)
      Why are you late? (of reason)
      How do you go to school? (of manner)

Excercise
Find out the adverbs in the following sentences and say what kind of adverbs they are :
1.    Do not come to me often.
2.    They are fully informed
3.    He is writing a letter now.
4.    Your answer is absolutely wrong.
5.    Did you see him any where?.
6.    Where has he gone?.
7.    He was perfectly alright.
8.    Eat an apple a day.
9.    When are you leaving?
10.  He ran fast and got the first prize.
11.  Why do not you come to school?
12.  Well done, by boy!
13.  Now they move slowly.
14.  Our officer comes late daily.
15.  They are standing outside.
16.  Come here and stand there.
