Tablets

 Definitions
1.  A solid dosage form containing medicinal substances with or without suitable diluents; it may vary in shape, size, and weight, and may be classed according to the method of manufacture, as compressed tablet.

2.  Tablets may be defined as the solid unit dosage form of medicament or medicaments with or without suitable diluents and prepared either by molding or by compression.

3.  Tablets are solid unit dosage form of medicament and medicaments with or without suitable diluent and prepared either by molding or compression method.

 Advantage of Tablets
Tablets have following advantages :-
i.     They are easy to carry.
ii.    They are easy to swallow.
iii.  They are attractive in appearance.
iv.   Ease of administration.
v.    Dosage accuracy.
vi.   Dosage flexibility.
vii.  Portability.
viii. Stability.
ix.   Ready availability.
x.    Economy large scale production.
xi.   Ease of production , storage , transport , economy and quality control department.

 Disadvantage of Tablets
Tablets have following disadvantages:-

i.     Some drugs are difficult to compress due to low bulk density are amorphous nature.
ii.    Tablets are difficult to swallow for children and old patient.
iii.  Bitter tasting drugs and drugs with an abjection able dour.
iv.   Not suitable for drugs that are highly degradation.
v.    Huge equipment and space is needed.

 Classification & Composition of tablets
Based on the method of manufacture are on the intender use tablets are following kinds:

1.    Compressed tablet.
2.    GIT delivered tablet.
3.    Conventional compression tablet.
4.    Multiple compression tablets.
5.    Film coated tablet.
6.    Enteric coated tablet.
7.    Sugar coated tablet.
8.    Chocolate coated tablet.
9.    Gelatin coated tablet.
10.  Effervescent tablet.
11.  Chewable tablet.
12.  Sustained release tablet.
13.  Cavity delivered tablet.
14.  Buccal tablet.
15.  Sublingual tablet.
16.  Lozenges or trashes tablet.
17.  Dental cones.

 Classification & Composition of tablet
1.    Uncoated tablet.
a)    Chewable tablets: There are chewed and saw allowed such as--
      Antacid
      Vitamin C
      Multivitamin

b)    Sublingual tablets: Taken under the tongue there drugs are easily dissolved, rapidly absorbed and  discorded when desire affect obtained such as-
      Nitroglycerin.
      Nifedipine.
      Isoprinosine sulphate.

c)    Lozenges tablets (no disintegrating agent)
d)    Effervescent tablets: they are intended to be dissolve or dispersing water before administration such as__
      Disprin

e)    Implant tablets: These are implant in a  highly compressed form, release slowly and remain for action of years such as-
      Norplant(hormonal contraception)
f)    Sustained release tablets: This release in sub sequent amount a single part prolongs the duration of action of drug. Such as___
      Diclofenac-SR

2.    Coated tablets: There are three types.
      Sugar coating.
      Film coating.
      Enteric coating.

 Essential properties / Qualities of a good Tablet:-
1)    They should be accurate and uniform in weight.
2)    They drugs should be uniformly distributed throughout the tablets.
3)    The size and shape should be reasonable for easy administration.
4)    The tablets should not be too hard that it may not disintegrate in the stomach.
5)    They should be elegant product having own identify.
6)    There should not have any incompatibility while in combination.
7)    They should be free of defects. Such as__ chips, cracks discoloration and contamination.
8)    Manufacturing process should be easy and economic.
