
Verbs
A verb is a ‘Telling word’. It says
something about a person or thing. A verb is a ‘Doing word’ also, when it
expresses an action.
Verbs are classified into : ‘be’ form
verbs and action verbs.
a) ‘Be’
form verbs (is, am, are, was, were) show what persons, things or animals are.
They do not say what the persons, things or animals do.

Example:-
• This is
my book.
• I am a
teacher.
• You are
my student.
• He was
at London last Monday.
• They
were here last week.
b)
Action verbs say what persons and animals do. They express some action.
These action verbs are classified into.
1. Transitive
2. Intransitive
1. Transitive Verbs :
This kind of verb always takes an object.
Example:-
• The boy
ate two apples.
• Who
killed the dog?.
• The
singer sang a song.
• He can
drive a car.
2.Intransitive Verbs :
A verb that does not take or have an object is
called an Intransitive verb.
Example:-
1. She is
walking.
2. They are
playing.
3. She went
away.
4. My sister
has gone.
