
Prepositions
A preposition is a word placed before
a noun or pronoun in a sentence.
It shows the relation of the noun or
pronoun with some other word in the sentence.
There are a number of prepositions in
English. some of them are given below : at, by,
for, in, of, on, up, to, about, above, across, after, before, betwen, down,
form, near, into, over, till, through, under, with, within, without, etc.
Functions of Prepositions :
1. A preposition relates a noun to another noun of pronoun :
Example:-
• The
man on the horse (preposition "on" shows the relation of
"man" to "horse" [noun])
• The
ball is under the table. (preposition "under" shows the relation of
"ball" to "table" [noun])
• I
bought a book for you. (preposition "for" relates "book" to
"you" [pronoun])
• There
is no information about him. (preposition "about" relates
"information" to "him" [pronoun])
2. A preposition relates a noun to a verb :
Example:-
• He
studies in London. (preposition "in" relates "London" to
"studied" [verb])
PREPOSITIONAL PHRASES
There are some prepositional phrases
too. Some of them are given here :
infront of, at the back of, in the
middle of, at the top, at the bottom of, by the side of, etc.
Functions of the Prepositional phrases
:
Prepositional phrases do the same
functions of the prepositions, i.c., relating a noun to another noun, or a
pronoun or a verb.
Example:-
• There
is a boy in front of the door. (preposition phrase relates "boy" to
"door" [noun])
• Look
at the girl by the side of him. (preposition phrase relates "girl" to
"him" [pronoun])
• An
oldman is standing at the bottom of a tree. (preposition phrase relates
"tree" to "standing" [verb])
Exercise
Find out the prepositions in the
following sentences :
1. Put
the ball into the table.
2. Can
you write without a pen?
3. He
will come after tow days.
4. I
have heard about you.
5. David
is running along the road before me.
6. Please
come to our house on Sunday.
7. There
is a dog near the tree.
8. We
are sitting under a tree in the park.
9. Do
not go to the river for a swim.
10. I
threw the ball through the window.
11. Kamal
is swimming across the river.
